How do you layer your treatments?

Introduction

Magali Calmon is the director of an aesthetic medicine clinic in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Thanks to her hospital experience, Magali not only assists her patients prior to treatment, but also ensures that post-treatment follow-up is carried out with the utmost benevolence. As Skin Expert for PERS, she now answers a recurring consultation question: how do you effectively combine and layer your skincare products?

Layeringcosmetics is a key step to maximizing results. However, accumulating layers indiscriminately can saturate the epidermis, cancel out the effectiveness of active ingredients, and even damage the skin barrier. In a barrier-first approach , layering obeys precise physical and biological rules.

The molecular golden rule: from the thinnest to the thickest

When it comes to cosmetic formulation, the most fundamental rule is texture and viscosity. Aqueous, fluid formulas must be applied before rich, occlusive textures, to ensure optimal penetration of active ingredients.

Serums (such as Vitamin C or Pro-Retinol) have molecules designed to melt rapidly through the stratum corneum. If you apply a rich cream first, the lipids will form a hydrophobic protective film. The serum applied on top won't be able to penetrate this barrier and will remain on the surface, losing all its usefulness.

Why is the order of assets so closely studied in clinical practice?

Because the wrong combination can lead to chemical incompatibilities or major irritations. Scientific literature shows that the success of a routine depends on complementarity:

  • The pH of formulas: some active ingredients need an acid pH to be stable (such as pure Vitamin C), while others thrive at a neutral pH. Spacing them out or respecting the right order avoids denaturing products.
  • Respecting the circadian cycle: the skin defends itself during the day (needing antioxidants and SPF) and repairs itself at night (needing cell renewal and lipids).

How to overlay your PERS protocol with precision

Morning: Protecting

The morning objective is to create a shield against oxidative stress (UV, pollution).

  1. Cleansing: Use Soothing Cleansing Gel to purify skin without removing its natural lipids.
  2. Vitamin C Serum 10%: Apply directly to clean, dry skin. Its fluidity enables it to act immediately as a benchmark antioxidant.
  3. Eye contour: pat on Eye Cream, enriched with niacinamide, to drain and brighten this delicate area.
  4. Moisturizing: Apply Light Cream (moisturizing emulsion) or Rich Cream as needed to seal in water.
  5. Invisible Gel SPF50+: Imperatively the last step. It forms the final protective film that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

Evening : Repair + Stimulate

At night, skin permeability increases, making it the ideal time to infuse deep-correction active ingredients.

  1. Double Cleansing: First Cleansing Balm to dissolve SPF and oxidized sebum, then Cleansing Gel to remove hydrophilic impurities.
  2. Pro-Retinol Serum 0.3%: Apply to perfectly dry skin. Let it penetrate for a few minutes before the next step, to allow it to initiate cell renewal.
  3. Intense Repair Rich Cream: Formulated with panthenol and allantoin, it envelops the skin to attenuate the potentially drying effects of retinol and restructure intercellular cement.

Common (and easy to avoid) layering errors

  • Don't wait between coats: Allow 30 to 60 seconds for your serum to absorb, to avoid "fluffing" when applying your cream.
  • Mixing SPF with cream or foundation: This dilutes the sunscreens and breaks the homogeneity of the protection. SPF is applied alone, on top of everything else.
  • Overdoing it: The skin has a limited absorption capacity. The 4-step PERS protocol is precisely calibrated to deliver just what's needed without saturating the tissues.

Things to remember

  • Always layer your skincare products from the most fluid (serum) to the thickest (cream)..
  • The morning is dedicated to protection (Vitamin C + SPF); the evening to regeneration (Retinol + Rich Cream).
  • A well-ordered routine ensures the stability of the skin barrier and optimizes every euro invested in your skincare routine.
