Skincare during pregnancy: the right steps to take

Pregnancy transforms the body. And the skin is no exception.
Between hormonal fluctuations, skin hypersensitivity and new precautions to be taken, many pregnant women wonder: which skincare products are still authorized? Which should be avoided at all costs? How can you prevent acne or pigmentation spots without taking risks?
To shed some light on the subject, Magali Calmon, dermatology expert and director of an aesthetic clinic in Paris, shares her essential recommendations for adapting your skincare routine during pregnancy.
Her approach is simple and safe: protect the skin, respect its physiology and support its needs without ever over-stimulating it.
Can retinol still be used during pregnancy?
Retinol must be discontinued during pregnancy, and even while breast-feeding. This active ingredient, derived from vitamin A, is formally inadvisable in this context.
However, you can continue to gently stimulate the skin. Once or twice a week, you can incorporate very gentle, light, non-abrasive scrubs.
In the evening, priority is given to repairing and rehydrating the skin. The aim is no longer intensive correction, but support for the cutaneous barrier.
How do I manage hormonal acne on a daily basis?
Hormonal acne is common during pregnancy. The key is to keep the skin clean and properly cleansed, without excess.
We recommend rigorous but gentle cleansing, ideally by double cleansing, especially in the evening.
Certain active ingredients are authorized during pregnancy, such as niacinamide and azelaic acid. They regulate sebum and soothe the skin without harming it.
The one thing you mustn't do is touch or manipulate pimples. Moisturizing remains essential, as does the daily application of sun protection.
How can I avoid pregnancy mask and pigmentation spots?
Pigmentation spots and the mask of pregnancy are linked to a strong hormonal fluctuation, which makes the skin more sensitive to the sun.
To prevent them, a rigorous routine is required: an antioxidant in the morning, such as vitamin C, combined with SPF 50+ sun protection with a PA++++ index.
This protection must be applied every day, without exception. Even moderate exposure can be enough to trigger spots. Regularity is therefore essential.
